Product Review
“This edited book is the first of two volumes dealing with public policy issues in eight countries from a comparative perspective. The first volume examines health and social welfare policies (eight chapters on each); the second volume will focus on education and environmental policy. Most contributors are academic political scientists who have written previously on their assigned countries, which include the US, Canada, Israel, Japan, and four European countries. Each chapter covers the history of policy development, current strategies, an evaluation of these strategies, and implications for the future. The book provides a systematic, updated analysis of health policy in eight countries as compared to 14 countries described in Comparative Health Systems, ed. by Marshall W. Reaffel. Appropriate for graduate libraries in political science, public policy, and public health.”–Choice
“This volume is the first of a two-volume sourcebook which covers health, social welfare, educational and environmental policies in eight countries: Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Israel, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. . . . Its value instead rests largely on its capacity to introduce interested readers tot eh experience of countries which they do not know or (perhaps less likely for this first volume used alone) to the experience of policy sectors outside their particular expertise. . . . The sourcebook no doubt is valuable as a place to start in studying the experience of other countries or other policy areas . . .”–Administraion Publique Du Canada
Product Description
The comparative study of international public policies and programs has assumed great significance over the past decade. One of the reasons for this trend is that government actions within many countries have been expanded in their scope and impact. As public demands for effective governnment provision have increased, modern welfare states are confronted with difficult issues. National governments must determine the most appropriate mix of public and private provision of services, the most effective strategies of government intervention, and the economic and social consequences of public intervention. The countries selected for this study represent a wide range of socioeconomic and political backgrounds and all possess mature welfare state systems. With the exception of Israel, the eight countries examined are members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD); this is particularly useful to this study because the organization collects standard public revenue and expenditure information for its member nations. In this volume, each country is analyzed from the perspective of its policies on health and social welfare. Each chapter follows the same general format of analysis: a brief history of policy development, current strategies of intervention, an evaluation, and implications for the future. This systematic study will prove to be an invaluable source of information for government officials, policy makers, public welfare agencies, and students in the social and political sciences.
