If you have ever read Daniel Dennett's "Darwin's Dangerous Idea", or Dawkins' "The Extended Phenotype and thought to yourself that the concepts they describe as the space of all possible genes/genomes were too woolly then this might be the book for you. The geometry of Genetics starts out easy, with a recapitulation of basic molecular genetics and the central dogma of the expressed protein-coding gene as we know it. Then the going gets tougher. After examining the broken symmetry of the genetic code, this book then dives into a realisation of the gene as a linear space which maps through the manifold of the genetic code onto a corresponding space of proteins. Further to this, the gene space and corresponding protein space are then realised in terms of the differential geometry of movement through this space. Quite bluntly, this is a difficult book, and I expect to spend a long time studying it. On the upside, I feel that the concepts it describes may permit a profound insight into molecular evolution, with the sort of precision formerly enjoyed only by the designers of artificial and restricted simulations such as the Game of Life. This book is potentially a very important reference for people working in the field of theoretical biology or perhaps in the experimental biophysics of DNA.
