Customer Reviews & Comments JUAN COLON ALIAS CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS by Brother Nectario M This small booklet attempts to demonstrate that the man who is credited with "discovering America" was a Spanish-born man named "Juan Colon" who took the name of Italian-born Christopher Columbus. A more accurate title for the booklet would be "Juan Colon discovered America" or "Columbus' Identity Theif". It is written by a Catholic Friar. The way this is shown is that letters attributed to Columbus show a very poor understanding of the Italian language and preferred to write in Spanish. It also shows that a man named Juan Colon (or Colom) was active in various seafaring adventures, including a tenure as a pirate! The reason given for why he concealed his birth name is that he was a Jewish man trying to avert the Inquisition. The evidence on the latter part is lacking and weakens the credibility of the rest of the booklet. This booklet does definitely show that someone named Colom or Colon would have been navigating the waters at the same time as Mr. Columbus, but doesn't conclusively show a "switcheroo". Still, it may be a good launchpad for Columbus scholars to begin researching alternative theories.
